I have been working with Joomla for little over 2 years now and have really enjoyed it. I have built a couple of solutions in Drupal and Wordpress too. Each project/site seems to have criteria/needs that make one of the three the obvious choice. With Joomla I have built sites that use: JReviews RSFormsPro (RSMail also) Fabrik K2 I am currently brushing up on Seblod 2.0. Why? B/c of the potential for using one component to do quite a bit. Disclaimer: Seblod 2.0 is RC3 right now, so my critique might be a little unfair. The interface is the most confusing one I have seen so far. Now that usually comes with power and ability. The simpler a solution is the simpler the interface and vice versa (not always but certainly the norm). The documentation is not there yet, but considering that the tool is still not released for production that makes sense. I look forward to where this project is going! It may not be fair, but I use the Drupal CCK and module system as a yard stick for Joomla and the "CCK"s that are out there now. Drupal is much more complicated than Joomla, but IMHO is much more suited for "complicated" or "intricate" site design. Just as Wordpress is easy for building simple brochure or blog sites, Joomla is much easier for building many types of websites than Drupal. I find that they have some overlap, but to me they all sit in their own ecosystem with their own target audience. At some point you may hit a "wall" with Joomla and it is at that point you wish you had more power. The trick is being able to see that wall prior to starting the Journey/Project and choosing the tool that best fits. I have found that to be true with K2 also (all of the components really). You will love K2 right up until you get to the point that you are stuck and then you will be frustrated with what K2 cannot do for you. By it's nature K2 (b/c it is easier to use out of the box) attracts people that are not going to easily extend K2 or modify it to their needs. So the irony comes in that those people using K2 are the same that will hit the wall and be stuck. If someone is a PHP/Joomla Guru and can easily climb the wall, they probably will not choose a tool like K2. So that means you will have two diametrically opposed groups around a tool like K2, those that love it or those that hate it. Personally I think it is a great tool for certain jobs. I think a lot of the frustration on this comment stream is that Joomla itself does not have a CCK built in. IMHO it should. Just as Drupal adopted the CCK (it is core in Drupal 7 but called fields), Joomla should have an extensible and adaptable CCK. I will say that Fotis' direction on this comment stream seems hostile to me. I guess I do not expect an owner of a tool like this to be so combative in communication. The guys behind Fabrik and JReviews are on here and I do not see them getting "into it" with commenters. Then again good development skills and good social skills rarely co-exist.

so... half of year gone and now i check some of this CCK: k2 & SOBI - is mix of elephant and bird. they big but still can fly somehow. zoo-lite and interesting but you must know php+mySql to get what you want form2content-very interesting. if you satisfied with Joomla section/category tree -its most simple way to build catalog. flexicontent- i test it now. and its very promosing. after all, the most powerfull yet understandable component of my short list of CCK sorry for my English :-)

Many great points. I have been testing Mighty Resources for a couple of months and I liked the idea and simplicity of the component and how it allows you to make any type of content. I have yet to use it in a producting site yet though. I have also tried old versions of both Zoo and K2 and I didn't like them back then at all. I think they both had problems with non-English contents or so. I can't judge them now of course, I am going to try K2 again I guess... I only wish Joomla developers come up with a built in basic CCK that is extendible instead of having us trying this or that and crossing our fingers that they will be developed by their companies for years to come.

Mighty Resources 1.5 release is expected on the May 1st. That's gonna be a very front-end oriented version of CCK. You can keep tracking on releases on official website.

I really have been enjoying k2... I wish that out of the box it was able to work with your installed joomla template a bit easier... but what can you do? :-) I ended up making a custom template for my site redesign.

Thanks, Unleash.it, for your suggestions. I agree with your comments about K2's extensions. It is also hard to believe that one cannot (readily) import data (CSV files) especially given that if I were to make a directory with, say 150 listings, and each listing has 50 fields worth of data, that is a lot of repetitive typing for entry, especially if you already have it on a spreadsheet, as I do right now! JReviews seems to offer this capability. Fabrik is frankly intimidating. SOBI isn't very good-looking. ZOO is pretty wild, IMHO.

dear Dan K Regarding what u said. we want to develop a new site using joomla , we want to customize our site to view 2 types of contents: 1- Articles ( also FAQ , BLOG ... etc ) but we intend to enhance the Joomla's basic CCK. 2- An Advanced Directory to allow our members to post a classified posts. we intend to use the JSBLOD for the first purpose and the SOBI2 for the second one. do u prefer that type of integration or there are a better way ? Regards

As for 'keeping' the admin UI user friendly, all I can say to those that might not like the idea of managing the majority of content from a single menu link, and feeling like the other functions in the article manager are 'dea'.. use Joomlas Admin module positions to create a custom menu for your users.. this way they can access the most used items and NEVER have to get into the main menu items unless they want to. Trust me, your clients will love it! :-)
