Joomla an SEO dinosaur?

Joomla forums - and Mambo before - have long carried threads with umpteen posts requesting changes such as strong URLs (search engine and human friendly, and Cool - so can keep the same URLs as upgrade etc) as core feature; and with just as many posts explaining why it's impossible to implement thesee ideas. Continues today, with J 1.5. Yet it seems Wordpress and Drupal have these matters about sussed. And MODx - which I learned of only lately; a page on the MODx site explains re this being SEO friendly, so could be interesting to try test with this as well. [I may give it a try; use Joomla and achieve some success with search, but after making some changes with OpenSEF component and SEF patch). And, yes, same or nigh on identical content would be best.

Interesting! If you play around a little and tweak some of the code in joomla, it is possible to get very high rankings. With my Joonla! site i've managed to rank higher on some keywords than the manufacurers. It is simple really. No matter what platform you use for your site, you have to understand your target seach engine's spider. If you know how your site is indexed, by which ever search engine, that has to be applied to the platform. Now where joonla has a little downfall is that you dont have direct access to meta tags. I have not done any seo on wordpress or drupal, and so i can only coment on joomla! Once we can add custom meta tags in joomla! this will change. Thanks for the report. Ben

How comparable are results based on different content?

Looking at the three websites what strikes me most is that not only they have different themes but also different content. The problem in comparing the results starts with the question of how comparable the content is. Maybe one city is more popular than the other, gets mentioned more often on the web and therefore has higher relevance for search engines and gets ranked higher... In 2005 a famous IT magazine here in Germany startet a SEO contest. They created a new fantasy animal (the Hommingberger Gepardenforelle ) and encouraged people to do their best to create a as high as possible ranked website for it. Maybe you should do something similar - create websites using different CMS but about the same topic, with the same content and find out which works best with standard settings. Later switch to optimized settings (document them!) and compare again after a while. It should be clear though, that you cannot rule out off-site factors and therefore results will remain doubtful. But wouldn't SEO be boring if it was different? ;-)

Tis expected

Wordpress has less page weight in terms of web cruft and is more semantically stable than Joomla! so it is expected that a search engine would love a easy to grab piece of content in comparison to an archiac CMS that doesn't even approach well-formedness. Drupal is probably closer to WP in terms of SEO / page weight than your figures suggest as it allows better coding schemas throughout ( as stated by Bean1975).. These results are as expected from the testing I've done previously.

Hi, again!

I think it is important to review this type of analysis without defensiveness. If there is something to learn and profit from - grab it! If there is no value, leave it behind. But, we do no good keeping our eyes shut or debating the minutia. The problem is there is no "test input data" that mirrors real world Google activity. And, there is no way to make perfectly similar sites. If you start modifying the base installs too much, then you are swaying the test. Frankly, what I would like to see is *more* of this type of testing. As more independent parties attempt to isolate variables and create comparative test beds, people will get better at doing it. Tough job - I am quite certain there is a more than a little bit of time invested to make this happen - freely shared results; way cool! :-) PS - congratulations to the Drupal community for v 5.0 & birthday 6.0! :-)

Hi Frando True - it could look better but images and a sexy theme wouldn't help too much in the search engine rankings. Or are you saying that the Friendselectric theme is not very well optimized for SEO? A Drupal 5.0 site will be coming this month :-)

A first step would be to select a different theme for the drupal site, as friendselectric is not a particular sexy theme. The easiest way would be to just update the site to drupal 5.0, which is a ridicolously simple process for such a simple site, and then use Drupal's new default theme, Garland. Alternatively you might want to browse the available themes at http://drupal.org/project/Themes, and pick one that seems to be fitting the site's purpose. Furthermore, the Drupal site is the only one that has no images at all, and it is the only one that doesn't have a "Hotels" or "Accomodation" page, which is probably something people often search for in search engines.
