Awesome article, very true that UI is more important than "new features". Administration UI is very important to clients. Log In and Registering are very important to users. A CMS should be built around these two factors. That Barebones CMS seems to be moving in the right direction. Might try it out.

Hi DimLit I think you read the article wrongly. I agreed that WordPress' usability is better than Joomla's. The point I was making was that even WordPress has a long way to go to keep up with the likes of Tumblr and Posterous. Joomla being behind has even further to catch up.

I'm sorry to have to be the one to say it, but this is a biased article. I am an avid (and years-long) user of Joomla, and more recently have come across ExpressionEngin e and Wordpress: each is useful for different purposes. Numerous clients who have received Joomla sites at their behest have asked for the entire site to be switched to Wordpress on account of Joomla 1.5's confusing article submission process: from its redundant Section/Category hierarchy (the advent of nested categories considered) down to what will be excerpted from an article; or where to put the "read more" line so that it doesn't break format (we have to assume that a client sees what they imagine they'll get). (It really has to be said: allowing end users to set permalinks is a common feature of both Wordpress and ExpressionEngin e. Joomla contains very little inherent SEO, let alone its lack of any inbuilt feature to allow users to create human-legible URLs. Tactfulness would suggest that one not bludgeon another system's feature-set before examining the principal features - or lack thereof - in the CMS one's trying to defend. I think Clapton had something to say along those lines as well.)

I see what you are saying about non-savvy users wanting fewer choices -- with Google being the most minimalist design possible (and still be a search engine). This is a philosophical issue. As a user (not a designer), I'm someone who gets really frustrated with so-called easy set up sites, such as those that build forms, because I want MORE options not less. But I do have clients who get very frustrated if they see a lot of options on a page and they want to do things themselves. The solution is to hide the complexity unless someone wants it -- that's why there are accordion tabs in WordPress and AdminPraise is so popular for Joomla. Bryan, I'm working with a designer like yours -- a guy who wanted to create a Joomla "template" without knowing what Joomla was. I was supposed to take his full page design and "Joomla" it. I said no. But this is a different issue than Bruce's question.

I believe the issues are larger than just Wordpress or any of the other CMS and site builders available. I recently built a website on the Wordpress platform for a group of Attorneys. The website design was done by a true graphical artist in Photoshop, with years and years of design experience (mostly in print media). My job was to translate his layered .PSD into a working website. He has no concept (or patience) for what I have to go through to get his custom design to render in Wordpress. I am rather familiar with Photoshop, so I know the source of his frustrations. And for the sake of this discussion, you can forget about Wordpress, Joomla or even Dreamweaver or basic HTML. He has no concept of CSS/PHP, HTML compliance or the implications of cross browser incompatibility .
