No question, Kyle's Admin templates have it hands down. I have been using both Admin Praise and AP2 since they were released. Though I favor AP for its cleaner look, AP2 is very deep, powerful and highly configurable. You can customize AP2 to your own personal liking. While Joomla Bamboo Crisp and Simpla are similar (I think they figured Kyle shouldn't have all the glory) to the AP's, IMHO they are not as good.

Admin templates are a huge leap forward in my opinion. Why shouldn't usability and function also be improved upon, in the same way that front-end templates are used to improve the visitor experience? What about the admin experience? Personally, I find that I can get things done a *lot* faster with an admin template. For me Joomla Bamboo's Crisp is the hands-down winner. Without exception, it is now the first thing I install on a new Joomla! site as I can then get the rest done faster.

Hi guys, Just so you know the editor seems to have missed my admin template which was very much released at the time of them writing.
Funny I found this post... I am doing my own usability tests and concepts with Joomla 1.6 and soon a new J! Admin template will be released to the quality bunch ;-) The template will be a fork of BlueStork with some major UI improvements. A few weeks more and a demo will be live.

Thanks Steve for bringing this hotly debated topic to an open arena for discussion. Personally, I haven't had the chance to try Kyle's templates yet, but I have installed the JB Simpla and to be honest, it's a nice change of pace for the Joomla backend. I've yet to try it on any client sites, but I will be doing further testing in the very near future. I happen to think there's no better feedback than that of a customer. They tend to be very vocal when they pay for something and don't like it. Kyle and Anthony both could ask for feedback on the usability of their new templates, but also, a quick spin around the block can also show just what they're made of.

@Ron, I certainly think the 1.6 template has many things right. Steve posted our "Secret New Design" which is going to be a fork of BlueStork with some modern updates we would have added to the core team. This explains the similarities as they're intended and is going to be a free release since it's a fork with mainly css3 visual updates and some layout optimizations. We feel these updates make 1.6 "feel" new and improved. It will also use our Activity Log, Sessionbar, and other useful additions that we've created in our mission to improve the Joomla admin. Of course, all our other premium admin templates are completely unique. @Jen, we don't ever say "ours is the best" though we do hear that that they are better all the time. That's not quantifying with numbers, but with real-world user feedback and opinions. I also think that there is more PRIDE than EGO involved (though a healthy portion of ego is important in design as you're putting yourself out there for criticism and must deliver your best). -- In comparing to the others: Drupal went through and painful process to deliver the D7 Admin, and WordPress spent a ton. With Joomla, you're getting more and more 3rd party developers doing all this hard work and testing on their end and the project benefits from it. Sounds like Joomla is getting the best of all worlds.

The Joomla administrator will be subject to usability testing during the beta phase. My company does usability testing, eye-tracking, etc. in our lab in San Francisco and we do this for a number of large companies. The resulting data will inform the refinements needed before Joomla 1.6 goes final. On a side note, if we weren't on the right track with 1.6 so far, why would Kyle have copied stuff from it? ;-)

I don't think anyone argues against improving the Joomla admin. However, Joomla should take the Wordpress approach of hiring a true usability professional, then doing user testing and improvements based on real, quantifiable data. Someone else then writes the code to make the tested interface come to fruition. Although we hear all kinds of nice stories from admin template developers about how much "better" their template is than Joomla's, we never get any quantifiable numbers. How is "better" defined"? "Better" for who? Who downloads their template, installs it, and abandons it because it's "too hard to use"? What exactly in the template is "better" and what is "worse"? The admin interface defines the product for most users. That's not necessarily true for developers, but it's true for designers and for end-user clients. As such, there is a LOT of ego tied up in the admin interface. It's all too easy to say "My admin template is best" and expect it to be incorporated into core. When the person who runs the usability testing is not involved with final development of the template, you mitigate a lot of that ego impact. Quantitative data also mitigates that ego. And that is where I'd like to see Joomla go. Jen
