Virtuemart SEO 3 - Sitemaps

Virtuemart SEOToday's Virtuemart SEO tip is short and sweet: how to set up a sitemap for Virtuemart.

First Choice

By far the best choice is the SEF Service Map in combination with its Virtuemart plugin. After installing the SEF Service Map, download the plugin and upload it to /administrator/components/com_sefservicemap.

This plugin provides quite a few options including the ability to show/hide products and categories, and show/hide product and category descriptions. It also includes a .txt site map for Yahoo.

Second Choice

If you prefer not to add VM products to you main Site Map, Alejandro Kurczyn over on the Virtuemart forums has designed a way to generate a standalone map for VM.

Livemap is a single file that can be uploaded to your root folder and then added to Google's Webmaster Console.

Third Choice

Joomap. We recommend this for many sites, but why not VM sites? Simple - it only lists VM categories, whereas the ideal tactic is to concentrate on having individual product pages indexed.

I have used alot of Joomla sitemap extensions but none worked the way I wanted it to. So I tried out, Unlimited Sitemap Generator , www.xml-sitemaps.com/standalone-google-sitemap-generator.html. It makes several sitemap formats and indexs what I want, so far I have been happy with and have gotten great results with it with all my Joomla! based websites. As of now that is my solution for sitemaps for Joomla.

Steve, I have to say, as I have often times, you offer truly great advise. However, I am a bit surprised that you have chosen this as a sitemap solution. By your recommmendation , I have recently tried this sitemap instead of xmap to see if it would generate better results, however, it is so incredibly slow that my dedicated server actually CRAWLED for the first time because of the strain this sitemap causes. My suspicion that the sitemap was the root cause was solidified by the resources my SQL database was driven to after the install and configuration. I have to say, on this one, I think you may want to reconsider something else. I am not entirely happy with XMap, and I can tell you that Joomap is a bad solution as Googles webmaster tools does not even recognize the site map as I had to pay a price to learn. Until something better comes along, I am going to stay with XMap until someone can point out a better solution.

Hey Jarret

You're referring to SEF Service Map? One problem it does have that might slow it down its lots of extra unnecessary images. How many links do you have on the sitemap?

I'd love for you to check it out with Xmap back on...Been testing it to see if it will past the test. ANY advice on what I can be doing better is greatly appreciated:

Unfortunately not yet Vince ... SEF Service Map is 1.0 only.

I have to agree with Jarret, the beta version of SEF service map for Joomla 1.5 does seem to slow my site to a crawl. I had to remove it in order to get a decent response from my client's site. I was also unable to get the Virtuemart integration working succesfully. So SEFservice map is off my sites until the finished version is complete and tested.

I do hope it works soon.

I'm running Joomla 1.5.9 and I just installed SEF Service Map 2 v. 2.0.4 with the VirtueMart integrator. It works beautifully and doesn't seem to have slowed us down any.
