Joomlatwork.com have updated their metadata patch for Joomla 1.5 Release Candidate 4. The patch is free to download by clicking here.
What Does the Patch Allow You To Do?Add Improved Metadata to Menu Items and Content Itemshttp://www.jo...ocs/joomla150_frontpage_seo.jpg You can gain control over page titles, the index/noindex tag, plus Google cache and snippet control Have Improved Control Over Sitewide Metadata from the SEO tab in Global Configurationhttp://www.jo...dmdocs/joomla150_seo_config.jpg
The tab has been greatly extended to include complete control over the default setting for the title tag, removal of the Joomla metatag, custom metadata fields plus Google cache and snippet control.
How does it work?In a similar way to the current SEF Patch for Joomla 1.0. Everything is done through XML files. With 1.5 you can define custom fields into a separate XML file so that you can add your own metadata fields.

We are working on SEF urls for 1.5. We hope to launch this within the coming weeks. Reason is that we are also not too keen on the SEF urls of J1.5.

Having the Joomla! Core SEF URLs working should be our common goal. So, if people have patches for the router.php files, let's get those patches into core.
Now, I have *yet* to find one person who thinks this URL is drop dead sexy: http://example.com/menu-item/nn-category/mm-article.html People are asking at an increasing rate how to "turn off" the numbers in the URL. So, creating system plugins that offer choice in the URL, makes sense. But, those plugins should change the value coming out of the router and going into the router, not change the router files. The router is like the network inside of Joomla! that directs traffic and ensures the application passes control correctly from one function to the next. There's nothing more "core" than that. If we all share a common goal of supporting the core router system, we can better ensure opportunities are open for all developers and, in turn, we better ensure innovation. What we want to avoid, as a community, is having many router systems that developers must code to, or worse yet, "development blocks" emerge were developers have to choose which sub-community to join, to the exclusion of the others. In doing so, we would throttle opportunity and innovation. If you are really for huge SEO advancements, then let's join together in support of a common, core router system for the entire Joomla! community. written by joomlatwork, January 28, 2008
Just launched a demo site of how the SEF URL component will rewrite URLs to give you an idea: demo.smartsef.org
The component will be released the next week(s) Richard

@Amy, I believe that the SEF patch of joomlatwork does not do anything for the URL rewrites and that it is just a matter of time that the functions in this Patch will be in the Core of Joomla. They are thinking in Joomla 1.6?
@Richard, the demo is looking good, I hope your component will end up as a core enhancement as well in the long run. I would love to use this new component, keep us informed! Write comment
