Review of AceSEF from Joomace.net

Written by Steve Burge

AceSEF logoA few weeks ago we covered the five most powerful extensions you can use to optimize your Joomla site. We had 80 comments on the article, but half-way through the discussion was hijacked by the developer of a new product: AceSEF. They managed to rub people the wrong way quickly. They have also had problems with voting irregularities on the Joomla.org Extensions site. All in all, I was prepared to dislike AceSEF.

I was very pleasantly surprised. AceSEF is as good as, and probably better than, the other Joomla SEO extensions.

How did it get so good so quickly?

It is a fork of SmartSEF that we reviewed very positively at the beginning of last year. Unfortunately the original developers never fulfilled its promise and the Joomace team took over.

First Thoughts

Installation is easy. Unlike other SEF URL components, there are clear warnings on what needs to be fixed in order to enable AceSEF.

AceSEF Warning

AceSEF Warning

The initial control panel screen is clean and with the exception of the Save / Apply / Cancel icons, everything is presented in a Joomla 1.5 style. The layout is logical:

  • First row: main configuration options
  • Second row: editing data
  • Third row: purging data
  • Fourth row: support links

cpanel

Configuration

The configuration screen most resembles SEF Advance and Artio SEF ... it is considerably simpler than sh404SEF. The options are clear and they all work. However, one thing I will not is that documentation is slim and the tooltips not very helpful. Want to know what "H1 headings" will do to your site? The tooltip helpfully explains "H1 headings". However, there are several nice features available from this screen. You can:

  • Apply H1 headings for article page titles
  • Redirect non-www pages to www (unlike other SEF components, this does work)
  • Insert Google and Yahoo verification codes
  • Use a solution called "Base href value" which solves the common problem of images not appearing on sites with SEF URLs.

Extensions

This is one are where AceSEF has a substantial lead over its rivals. With other SEF URL components you must FTP files to a variety of different folders and often even hack component code. AceSEF has a fully-operational plugin system. If you'd like SEF URLs for a 3rd party extension, you can upload the appropriate AceSEF plugin and choose how you want to handle the new extension:

AceSEF Extensions

You can then edit parameters for each extension via the admin area:

AceSEF Extensions

SEF URLs

As with all the other SEF URL extensions, there's an area where you can find all of the URLs on your site. You can search, then click to edit any URL you want to change. The same screen allows you to apply metadata to that page:

metadata

Metadata

A few weeks ago we reviewed iJoomla SEO and spoke of how easy it made the creation of metadata. To be honest, AceSEF isn't far behind. Its certainly far better and far easier than any other SEF URL extension. Metadata can be generated automatically and then edited from one central screen:

Review of AceSEF from Joomace.net

The only downside I can see is that this are often records a lot of unnecessary URLs (Print, PDF, RSS links for example) that clog up the screen.

Price

  • Free with a link back to the developer's site saying "SEO by AceSEF"
  • $19 without the link back
  • $39 without the link back and support plus migration from Artio SEF or sh404SEF
  • Extensions are available for 3rd party products. They generally cost either $9 or are free.

A Note of Caution

There's not much documentation. I was sometimes left confused as to what certain features did. Also, I love AceSEF so far, but:

  • I haven't yet taken it for a test drive on a large site or one with heavy traffic.
  • There are 80-odd extensions available for AceSEF. Not surprisingly I haven't been able to test more than a handful to see how wll they work. Caveat Emptor.

Compared to Other SEF URL Extensions

  • Compared to sh404SEF it is easier to use and because it has been regularly developed during 2009, has fewer bugs.
  • Compared to SEF Advance its has much better metadata control and of course - its unecrypted.
  • Compared to Artio SEF, it adopts some its best features, such as the ability to use Joomla's own router, but again, its metadata feature is several leagues better

The ability to install plugins from the admin is very well done, as is the parameter system allowing you to customize URLs for each 3rd party extension. The metadata screen is a real time saver. I wouldn't be surprised to see other SEF URL extensions try and catch up to AceSEF in these areas.

Overall

I hope the developers will drop the underhand marketing tactics - their product doesn't need it. It builds on the best features of SmartSEF and it adds a lot more besides. AceSEF is outstanding.

Thank you Steve for this review.
I really appreciate your transparency in expressing your thoughts. However, I have to clarify one point:

The power & flexibility of AceSEF does not come from SmartSEF. Of course that being a fork of a MVC styled component brought to us a lot of facility but "the best features of SmartSEF" that AceSEF includes are limited by used, locked and blocked. Other features:
- User-interface : New with AceSEF
- Configuration options : ? rewritten
- Extensions page : ? rewritten
- Meta Manager page : New with AceSEF
- Import/Migrate & Export page : New with AceSEF
- Upgrade page : New with AceSEF
- Moved URLs page : New with AceSEF
- Purge, Custom & 404 URLs : New with AceSEF

No wonder that the "Used" feature of SmartSEF is wonderful in accordance with other SEF components.

Regards,
Denis

If it is so good etc why isn't, or any of acesef, plugins listed at the Joomla Extensions Directory any more

Seems kind of odd to me. Extensions are usualy only removed when there is a security issue?

Read the "Extension Specific Categories" part of TOS in JED regarding AceSEF extensions.

Regarding AceSEF, we had some voting "misunderstands" (for us, irregularities for JED Team) with JED Team, thats why it has been unpublished.

BTW, I've never heard about removing extensions from JED because of security issues, most of extensions are removed because of their licenses.

@Brian : in this case it's the voting issue that Steve mentioned in the blog post itself. We don't normally comment on the reasons for unpublishing in the JED, but since Denis brought it up I'll just confirm it. There are no security issues that we're aware of with Acesef.

As for whether or not we do unpublish things for security reasons, we absolutely do. We regularly monitor several security report websites and unpublish any extension found where the current version has an exploit. We republish when the developer issues a patch to the exploit.

Thanks for the clarification Toni, I guess Steve updated the post after I commented. You've said all I needed to know about AceSEF to come to a conclusion as to their suitability

I am simply not sure about the license. Its clearly stated being GPL, which means I am free to remove the copyright.
Is there some catch?

Ivo it is NOT GPL http://www.joomace.net/joomla-...ef/license

The restriction on releasing modified versions is contrary to the GPL

I personally look forward to the day that SEF addons become 'almost' unecessary, by having at least a simple SEF options admin screen with similar features to Wordpress.

Come on J! developers, let's nail this basic requirement once and for all :-)

I am very interested in the overall performance of this tool. On a heavily trafficked site do the number of database queries slow do the site? See that info will provide a big step in giving a valid comparison of the different options.

Thanks!

This sounds like a pretty good extension. I'm going to give it a shot on one of my smaller sites and hopefully it can become my goto extension for SEF optimization.

since installing this and paying for it based on this review I have a brand new site that refuses to show category blog view. It shows it as a list.

I tried this on a new installation. If you set menu items to category blog view you will only get a list view. There are others having this same problem on their forum and there doesn't seem to a fix.

Brian, believe me at the time of posting this page contained information that the extension is GPL.
It was probably changed after my post.

Hi Ivo

I'm not sure about the comments and GPL.

I personally wrote that it is unencrypted ... a different thing.

I am interested in how AceSEF works out. I will not switch until I see a very solid reason to, so post here what others experience so I can watch this post.

Steve, thanks for the review, but I want a thorough testing on a real site. Please, take the time to do this for all of us and update this posting. We all don't want to test something like this with a new client and get embarrassed by its flaws. smilies/shocked.gif

@lemaudit63
As mentioned in the URL bellow, the issue was coused by a 3rd party module and it's fixed:

i think some acesef extensions are not well tested and have a lot of bugs.

when u buy acesef extensions u dont have any idea that extension will work or not. Because acesef extensions are not on JED. No reviews to have an idea. risky to buy them...

@Toni Marie
As you can read in the top of the review, not me but Steve (JED Team Member) brought up the reasons for unpublishing in the JED. So I think you meant "I" not "We".

@AceSef do not work
In the new version, released yesterday, JoomFish & BreezingForms issues has been fixed.

@chumbawamba
We try our best to test all actions of each component but human being brings always lacks that can be fixed.

On the other hand, we offer a demo site for almost all extensions where you can see them in action.

Also, non of other SEF extensions offers you 120 extensions.

@Denis Dulici
demo site is not enough because site is not much complicated. i tried one of acesef extension on a large complicated web site but i'm not pleased. i think acesef needs time to fix bugs.
i will wait for it. after i will buy those extensions. not now. because acesef will be great if bugs fix.

regards

So, is this extension *permanently* unpublished from the JED, or will it be re-listed at some time?

I've bought sh404sef extension for Agora from Acesef. I'm not happy because it is buggy.

Now I'm exploring ACESEF with Agora extension (free) hope to be more lucky.

ACESEF seems a very good product...

everywhere i read this same comment for acesef...

"Buyer Beware with aceSEF!! I purchased this product, spend several weeks trying to get it to work. It is filled with bugs. I asked for a refund and was denied/ignored. They took my money and did not give me a workable product. They ignored my support posts, and said everything will be fixed in the next release, which I waited for...and the latest release just created more issues!

If you want more details on my situation go here http://www.mycampspot.com (this is not a spam site. Just a throwaway site I have used to document my issues with acesef.) "

but when u visit http://www.mycampspot.com, u will see "i love acesef".

did Denis hack this website? smilies/shocked.gif

I am the owner of http://www.mycampspot.com. aceSEF and I had a major misunderstanding at the beginning of our relationship. I flew off the handle, and created some bad press for them.

aceSEF has delivered on all my issues. Therefore, I am now a happy aceSEF user.

nowhere to be found how to integrate Section in your URL, like sh404SEF does. Worthless extension.

On the face of it one has to agree with Steve's review. AceSEF is simpler and has more features. The problem is that once you install it on your live site, the bugs start coming out of the woodwork and start generating bad URLs - lot's of them!

The biggest problem is the number of items in a page. If you don't have the standard 10/page and if you don't configure it in the extension plugin, you will start getting URLs which are simply crazy www.example.com/site/page3-5 and so on.

The other problem is that at times a particular category or a section in Joomla is subverted by ACEsef. What I mean is that if you have chosen the blog view for a category in Joomla with say 10 items on a page, sometimes ACEsef converts that to a table view with 20 items!!! To get back to the original view you will have to delete the SEF URLs in the ACEsef control panel.

While the documentation is bad, their support forum is even worse. Every question that you ask is referred back to the Forum Rules page and you get zilch support!

ACEsef's biggest problem is the unstability of the URL generation and your site could start showing up thousands of bad URLs. Cleaning and managing this becomes a full-time job.

Unfortunately, I am stuck with ACESEF but I would advise others not to use this extension unless their support improves and they stop resorting to cheap sales tactics.

@Kirti
First of all, the component name is "AceSEF"...

AceSEF is the first SEF component that generates accurated pagination for Joomla! 1.5. The "Items per page" value is a must for J! 1.5 SEF URLs.

Blog-List view of category issue, even if it's not AceSEF originated issue, has been resolved since AceSEF 1.3.

As regarding documentation, none of other SEF components offers you such a detailed documentation, here it's our doc link:
http://www.joomace.net/documentation/acesef

Support, yes you should read Support Rules to get SEF support because we need some data (versions, SEF & Real URLs etc that you don't prefer to give) from you to solve SEF issues, here you can see your own opened topics:
http://www.joomace.net/support-forums?func=fbprofile&userid=2609

Neither AceSEF nor other SEF components doesn't generate URLs, their converts Real URLs to SEF and if you've bad URLs that means that your site is generating them, not AceSEF.

About our sales tactics, you're using the free version of AceSEF and haven't purchased even 1 extension from us so you've not paid anything to get so regret...

After all, people are trying to help you for free by requesting from you to give them the needed information described in Support Rules but you still refuse it...
