The World's Most Popular Joomla Sites

Joomla Web TrafficBrian Teeman posted earlier this week about Joomla.me which tries to find the most visited Joomla sites. The results were somewhat strange with quite a few minor sites appearing high up. On closer inspection it seems that the major problem was their methodology was using Alexa.com, a notoriously unreliable guide to website traffic numbers.

So I'd like to open this up to community. What do you think are the most heavily trafficed Joomla sites? I'm particularly interested to hear from any of you with traffic numbers for large sites. Using Compete.com and data the sites have published about themselves, here's my opening guess for the top 10 most popular sites using Joomla:

  1. Quizilla.com (modified Joomla platform, over 200 million page views per month)
  2. Joomla.org (over 5 million uniques per month)
  3. Gazzetta.gr (3.5 million uniques and 12.5 million page views per month)
  4. TNAWrestling.com (over 2.2 millions uniques per month)
  5. Linux.com
  6. Kontera.com
  7. Infusionsoft.com
  8. Cricbuzz.com
  9. IHop.com
  10. TheHill.com

Close contenders:

  • Guggenheim.org
  • TGDaily.com
  • ITWire.com
  • Thaindian.com
  • Rockettheme.com (2.5 million page views per month)
  • Devshed.com

Understanding that there won't be a 100% right answer to this question, lets see if we can have the best possible guess at the top 10 most popular Joomla sites.

My suspicion is that any site will need at least 1/2 million uniques per month to compete and that the final top 10 will getting over 1 million per month. Over to you ... what sites can crack this list?

I'd say Linux.org and Joomla.org are probably pretty close traffic wise.

Thanks Chad - do you mind me asking if that's more than an informed guess?

RocketTheme has to be a contender, right?

That's true Sean - I wouldn't be surprised if Rockettheme.com has at least hit the 1/2 million mark.

If you use purely 'unique' visitors then we are not that high, we get about 350k uniques per month. As we are a membership site with very active forums most of our activity is from returning users. We get about 2.5 million page views per month.

Thanks Andy

That's one of the reasons we'll never get an authentic answer to the most popular Joomla sites ... traffic comes in all different shapes and sizes.

However, hopefully this list will hope answer the commonly-asked question of whether Joomla can support high-volume sites.

I think www.joomlashack weighs in at # for template sites, for a recent month:

380,000 Visits
269,000 Absolute Unique Visitors

We run stock Joomla 1.5, and have done no real server optimization, cahcing etc.

Sorry, now I have correct in Joomla.me (www.joomla.me), the most popular Joomla sites is cpxinteractive.com
But I think that the open questions is the 3% of websites all over the web is made with Joomla.

cpxinteractive.com is a great find, Alex.

My question would be ... is it just a Joomla-facing site in front of a non-Joomla adserver. It seems the adserver is responsible for all its traffic.
