Open Question: Joomla and Google Alerts

Joomla and Google AlertsOver the next few weeks I thought it would be fun to throw out a few open question. We'd love to here your answers to the first questions:

What kind of success do your Joomla sites have with Google Alerts?

  • Are your blog posts always picked up for the keywords you're targeting?
  • Do you end up in the blog or news category?
  • Do you have any particular tricks to make sure your posts are emailed to as many people as possible?
My personal experience is that I can set up a Wordpress site tomorrow and have 100% of the posts picked up. However Joomla sites have been much more hit-and-miss.

still getting the hang of it. google itself is happily indexing all new content within an hour of it being added to the site but getting notified of the content in an alert.... as you say its hit and miss.

I'm doing some tests to see if i can work out why but with no luck yet so Im very interested to hear any tips

I have a Joomla site that's been running for a few months but Google Alerts never work for the site. I have to type in a really specific alert [?yourname? site:www.yoursite.com] to get any success. "Yourname" should be enough. I'm not using sh404SEF because it didn't work with my site. Any ideas?

The best advice I can give you to get your blog onto Google Alerts is to find sites that do get mentioned on Google Alerts for your keywords, and comment on them. Be sure to include a link back to your site with your comment. In time Google will associate your site with these keywords and include you in alerts as well. I have a blog post on this issue:
