I've decided to set the bar high by looking for sites that do over half-a-million uniques per month or belong to a truly substantial company. A good rule of thumb is "do they have a Wikipedia entry?" Here's what I've found so far:
Feel free to post more sites in the comments and I'll add to this list whenever we find a new one. Comments (35)

The site I was most surprised to find on that list is Danone. It's great they are using Joomla!
To be honest though, I find it somewhat disappointing that not more large websites are using Joomla... Although after using Drupal it's understandable. I think we would be able to find more large companies that use Drupal as opposed to Joomla. written by julien, June 10, 2008
that's a great post.
Wouldn't it be related to a certain explosive thread of the joomla forum where someone was actually questioning the fact that joomla is not good enough for large company and was advertising drupal? Either way, we should invite him to read this post. You have some serious company in this list. Like you said about Danone: (A lot more than just yogurts); you are perfectly right. Danone is "ginormous" thanks again for this great site cheers

Hi Amanda,
Just out of curiosity, what is it you call high traffic ? can you give us a rough idea of nb of unique visitors per day on each site for instance ? Rgds written by Ano Hito, June 25, 2008
I really did not consider it as famous people, I guess I should have rephrased it as Vandergriff Motorsports as its the Official site for Vandergriff Motorsports and not just Bob Vandergriff.
