Review of sh404SEF URL Extension

Written by Steve Burge
sh404 SEF

Background

sh404SEF is developed by Yannick Gaultier and it is a fork of 404 SEF, a project started back in 2004 on the Mambo platform. The lead developer of 404 SEF was Beat, better known now as one of the main driving forces behind Community Builder. Artio SEF is also a fork of the same product and at least initially you'll see a lot of similarities between the two.

What Do the URLs Look Like?

  • /joomla-license-guidelines.html
  • /contact-us/
  • /search.html

How Do I Install it?

Full installation instructions are inside the component and appear when you upload it. On most server configurations it will be as easy as installing the extension and changing the .htaccess file to accomodate third party SEF extensions.

Support

Very good. Search the Joomla and Virtuemart forums for sh404SEF and whenever its mentioned you'll see Yannick popping to answer questions. He also runs an official support forum.

Development

I have received about a dozen updated versions from Yannick in the last week. Currently version 1.2.4 is live. Development has been ongoing since August 2006.

Supported Components

Many, because of its ability to use sef_ext.php files from OpenSEF and SEFAdvance. You'll need to download and install the particular files from their respective sites.

Features

  • Its free including options for Fireboard, Virtuemart and Community Builder! Currently its the only SEF URL solution able to cover Joomla's three most important extensions.
  • Removing the section and category from the URL to make the page appear closer to the root is possible.
  • Creates 404 error logs so you can see where you may have broken incoming links and possible errors on your site.
  • Allows custom redirects.
  • Does a very good job of removing non ASCii characters from URLs. No odd characters such as % ` $ & that are produced by other SEF components.
  • Works well with Joomfish.
  • Automatically maps non-SEF URLs to its SEF equivilant.
  • It comes with an excellent default set-up. It uses dashes instead of underscores and automatically maps all core components to short and sweet URLs such as /search.html.
  • Low number of queries. Significantly less than Artio SEF.
  • Ability to cache URLs.
  • Easy upgrade. Simply uninstall the old component and install the new - all your settings remain in place.
  • Able to use sef_ext files for OpenSEf and SEF Advance.
  • Numerical URL addons to make a site eligible for Google News.

Overall Impression

I have to admit that for the first time in this series, I really struggled to find things wrong with an SEF URL extension. I love the fact it works with Fireboard, Virtuemart and Community Builder, and that it contains the best features of several other extensions (caching, mapping non-SEF to SEF URLs, using sef_ext.php files from elsewhere). It has all the advantages of Artio SEF, but without the drawbacks of advertising in the metadata, heavy server usage and commercial plugins.

The one thing that stops me from giving it an unreserved thumbs-up is that I haven't yet had the chance to take it out of the sandbox and test it on a site with heavy traffic. If you have, I'd love to hear from you. After a thorough testing, I'm confident enough with sh404SEF to give it a run on a big site myself and I'll then update this review.

How did you remove the hits counter?

Hi Lloyds

Thats coming from somewhere else - sh404SEF doesn't provide the hits counter.

Dang...maybe I added a plugin. I've looked up and down. It certainly integrates with the "email this" and "bookmark" tool.

Check it out if you please: http://deathrattlesports.com/2...World.html

i'm using sh4sef for myself. There are few problems with vm1.1 and joomla (according to their forum mainly due to buggy vm1.1) but it does work anyway.

sh404SEF is a great component. However they don't develop, neither update, too much plugins for Joomla components and it's up to users to do them. smilies/sad.gif

Hi SuperGoofy

Thats true to an extent ... sh404SEF is a one man operation.

The plugins aren't up to the users, but the developers of each extension. They know their code best.

it's really an advanced gr8 modification
I recommend it also
thanks for the details about it and about the bug in some other plugins I think it's up to other plugins developer to develop a hack or something to fix the bug and make thier plugin work with most Seo modification as Joomseo , sh404SEF , Joomla Sef , and Artio Joomla

I've installed the sh404sef component and would like to enable it for Fireboard, but I've heard that there is supposed to be a sef_ext or something to improve this? Could anyone please send me a link? I simply cannot find it and the Joomla.org community seems to be on a vacation or have lost their interest..?

Hi Hunder

sh404SEF comes with the Fireboard plugin built into it.

I am using sh404SEF with Virtuemart, but I am running to trouble because my client keeps adding products with the same description, so I have multiple products with the same URL. Is there anyway to use the SKU number with or instead of the description?

Hi Luke

Yes - there should be an option to insert the product number into the URLs.

I have to say that to date, all SEO that i have ever needed to achieve and atain great rankins comes from JPromoter, it allows for complete control over your urls. Now there is one annoying feature that it needs to be re-indexed when you add new pages, however, no other sef component can provide you with the total control and simple sef urls that are practical and not long. sef404 urls are long and contain numbers, Jpromoter allows you to have website.com/portfolio, this is much cleaner than website.com/section/4/websites, section 4 is not needed and will not rank as well.
I asked joomla equipment why they are not making a 1.5 version, they said that there is a router.php funtion that should be re-writte in virtuemart, i hope it comes out soon.

had sh404sef running on my website: www.dokter.nl, 5-10k visitors/day, 3G traffic/day, loved the beautiful URL`s but had to change back to dynamic. My site became so slow >9s. And the mentioned pagination problems. Anyone any idea how to get my desired sh404sef back without making it to slow,

Hi all,

Have not checked this review for a while, there are a few comments now !

@Naturalne kosmetyki : usage with Virtuemart 1.1.1 : this version of is very buggy when it comes to sef urls. Many things stop working. I have had to debug it myself and many bug fixes for VM are provided on the support forum. VM 1.1.2 seems to improve, but not there yet.

@SuperGoogy : "sh404SEF is a great component. However they don't develop, neither update, too much plugins for Joomla components and it's up to users to do them". Don't know what you mean. There have been several releases since the date you posted. As for users doing plugins, there are currently 28 core plugins and about 30 more user-submitted ones. More are coming on a regular basis. It is not up to the users to make them. It is up to the joomla extensions authors to do them (do you really expect SEF extension to write 3 000 plugins to cover a large parts of Joomla extensions ?

@leon : "no other sef component can provide you with the total control and simple sef urls that are practical and not long. sef404 urls are long and contain numbers," Don't know where you got that idea. sh404sef urls don't have numbers (though you can have numbers if you so whish). sh404 urls are just as long as you want them. It is by far the SEF extensions that gives you the more control on your urls, with more than 50 parameters only to decide how you want them to be.
"website.com/section/4/websites" : sh404sef will not produce anything like that, unless you force it to do it by changing the default parameters.
Have you tried sh404sef ????

@dokter : speed : sh404sef will always be slower than native Joomla or no sef at all. You have not said whether this was on Joomla 1.0.x or 1.5.x. My benchmarking have shown differences between 5 and 25% slower than Joomla native SEF, depending on the kind of sites. You need to make sure you use the url cache system of course, for best performance

For speed: make sure you are caching your urls. In other words turn on cache in sh404 and if tht is not helping. I would suggest it is something else you have running...

We've got sh404SEF working pretty well with Joomla 1.5.8 and VM on this Diesel Tuning site: http://www.dte-diesel-tuning.com. Pagination occasionally goes and the URL cache has to be renewed, and there are a few 404 errors caused by the VM component of sh404SEF occasionally leaving te category out of he URL, both of which we would like to resolve, however on balance the SEF advantages are worth it and the site works well.
Good review by the way - thanks!
Pete

I really have only one thing to say... the best extension for joomla... to be fair - i have to admit i never tried any other sef component... i didn't need to :D it had all i wanted (and some stuff i learned that i wanted a while after installing it).
i just wonder - will there ever be a final j!1.5 version? i havn't found any bugs in the beta but still...
thanks for a great component...

I use it on my site www.huntingfishingforum.com, and it seems to work just fine. It gets a big amount of hits, I'm just wondering how well it works with other seo plugins such as joomseo, because I would like to input important keywords in my meta description and title just as this would do. Still not sure if I should use the two together, I'm not a big php coder so it might not work.
