Image Resizing in Joomla

I've been searching all over for an answer to a question I get asked frequently in Joomla classes:

"How can I resize images as I upload them?"

There are several good answers to this question including:

    1. The new advanced image manager from JCE ($20)
    2. Alientation Image Editor (?9.99), basically an image editor installed as a Joomla component.
    3. Using the JCK Editor (free)

However, while those are good choices for experienced users, they all have drawbacks for beginners:

    • They require users to know how large they want the image to be as they upload
    • Alienation requires users to log out of the article and go to the component
    • All of them require more learning steps for the end-user

What's The Easiest Joomla Resizing Solution?

Image Resize by Daniel Beck. It works so naturally with the Joomla workflow that users don't even notice it. Here's how to use it:

    • Step 1: Install the plugin from Joomlaforge.net and enable it.
    • Step 2: Go and edit an article.
    • Step 3: Click on the image link at the bottom of the article and upload an image.
    • Step 4: Insert it into the article. Drag the corners until the image is the size you want it to be.
    • Step 5: When you view the article on the frontend, Image Resize automatically creates a thumbnail of the image to your chosen size.
This way beginners are free to edit and resize the images on the fly and as many times as they wish until looks how they want.

Is there anything like the facebook photo uploader where the images get resized before they are uploaded and can upload multiple images?

Good Article Steve. I created myself a reminder to check out "Image Resize". Recently we had a client who embedded a 2MB image and just scaled it down making the page loading very slow. We use JCE Editor: www.joomlacontenteditor.net/ on all our sites and for our clients just for this purpose created a blog post how to resize the image during upload: www.ogosense.com/blog/image-uploading-and-proper-resizing-in-joomla.html and they already have an image uploaded, they can use: https://www.ogosense.com/blog/image-uploading-and-proper-resizing-in-joomla/Page-2.html

I hope you or others find these tutorials helpful as well. Cheers :-) Ogy

There are also some other ones, which creates a thumbnail and then a lightbox which shows the original size. Good for the thumbnail version, but you still have problems if it is a 2 MB photo directly from a digital camera or so.

I'd like to see what comes out the winner in this. I've had to post images for my users because I don't trust them not to post a 2 meg image. I'm thinking if I find a good image resizing util I'll put up a page for posters with suggested images sizes:cry:

      Hi Susan

This one I recommend here has the least features, but I like it for people for whom even understanding what pixels are is too much.

I have my training support person evaluating the plug-in...she found out it requires ImageMagick on the server..something not mentioned on the Joomla download site. I wish they would put a "requirements" list with those downloads.I have access to my server to install software but not everyone does.
