After the Chaser's week in the world's spotlight, another Joomla website has caused an online sensation.
MarryOurDaughter.com received 20 million page views in the last two weeks and seemed to be a site where people could sell their teenage daughters into marriage. Prices varied from $20,000 to $50,000. Needless to say a lot of people were pretty angry.
Look a little close however, and the site doesn't seem quite a serious as it first appears. One of the testimonials reads:
“Our 15 year old daughter Mary wasn’t very popular and did nothing but mope around the house bringing everybody down, so we decided to marry her off through your site. Now our house is a lot cheerier and we love our new swimming pool and Jaccuzi!"
The site turned out to be a hoax by a serial prankster. Its a parody aimed at drawing attention to inconsistencies in U.S. state marriage laws. States consider it a crime for adults to have sex with people under 16, but they allow kids as young as 12 to get married with parental and sometime judicial permission.
