Comparing Joomla 1.5 and Mambo 3.0 Print
Friday, 25 January 2008

Mambo and Joomla LogosWant to get your head around how far Joomla has come since the early days of Mambo? Download and install one of these 5 and 6 year old versions.

What Will You Find in Mambo 3.0.4?

  • No WYSIWYG Editor
  • No install instructions (they arrived with Mambo 3.0.5)
  • No separate folder for extensions or templates
  • The very first browser-based installer
  • 324 Kb in total file size
  • Unencrypted passwords in the database
  • A cron job needed to get any newsfeeds

Images of Mambo 3.0

I tried, but wasn't able to get Mambo 3.0.4 working successfully on PHP 4.4.7.  The URLs didn't work and the administrator wouldn't permit logins. However I did take these screenshots:

Ah a blast from the past. Its hard to believe looking at my Joomla 1.5 install that I was so impressed when I saw the first beta of Mambo 4.0

To get an idea of the range, or lack of, extensions that were available have a look here

http://www.mamboportal.com/component/option,com_remository/Itemid,46/func,selectcat/cat,8/

70 Templates
20 Modules
38 Components

And many of those components are just different language releases of the same component

It is the same way we look back at the old web and design in general. That is, back when gas was affordable! smilies/cheesy.gif
