Change Joomla Can Believe In

Written by Steve Burge

Joomla.org has a new template today. The design looks a little similar to the website of another emerging new force in the United States.

It's also interesting to note that the ! has been dropped from most uses on the homepage, something most books and blogs have done for a while.

I like the look of the new site - looks clean and efficient!

Personally I think Joomla can live without the ! !

another new, disruptive force in the United States.

That's not going make the democrats happy.

Hey Dave - I changed that wording to make it a little clearer.

I'd probably actually vote for Obama if I could ... unfortunately, I'm just a "resident alien" as my green card so nicely puts it.

...perhaps Joomla is feeling god-like now, too, thus the copycat template of the self-proclaimed messiah. smilies/smiley.gif

Nonetheless, I welcome any facelift given to the old site, which has long been showing its age. Any word on when the entire site will migrate, to include a new forum template that is much-needed?

Nice link, Mark

There are more differences than similarities between the designs, however. Even John McCain has taken some elements of the Obama design: http://johnmccain.com/

Maybe everyone's having a look at the new template but a much, much slower response time for me.

Hi Eddie

I think the speed is server-related rather than template-related. You should see a quicker response as soon as that's fixed.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Joomla.org powered by Joomla 1.0? The new homepage is powered by Joomla 1.5 and features friendly URLs--wonder if they are using the SEF patch, or could it be what they're working on for 1.6?

I like the new look, but it's jarring that the other sections on the site don't feature the template--Community is a new feature to the site but has the old template. In fact every link except for "About Joomla" on the top menu takes you to the old look and feel.

Hopefully they can get a consistent look and feel sooner rather than later.

Wow - the new site is a huge improvement. Now if they can just make their API, API wiki, DEV stuff a little more streamlined, I'll be REALLY happy.

Interesting - they only really changed the front page. Why not do it right and redesign all of it? It looks goofy to me having two completely different styles between that front page and all the other areas (such as community)

About the SEf question. We use a default installation of Joomla 1.5.6 with SEF enabled and no add on installed.

We have chosen to migrate the old-look sites step by step, migrating all sites and content at once is just to much work and risky. And we spend some time on fixing the security issue, so we where quite busy with other stuff ;-) Trust me, we'll migrate as soon as possible.

We're working on the API documentation, and we hope to have it soon decently located into our documentation areas, please be patient the number of volunteers is not that big (holiday season, or maybe a good moment to join in and help us).

Thanks for the post Wilco smilies/smiley.gif

Agreed, stage-by-stage is wise. Dig deeper guys and you'll see the homepage has also had a lot of new content added ... it wasn't just a template change today.

@Willebil

That's all understandable. You guys do have a lot of content to migrate so I do understand that....

And I brought up the API stuff mainly because, as a beginning Joomla Extension Developer, it has been pretty hard for me to get up to speed on the API. I'm sure that people coming from a more object oriented programming heritage will have an easier time, but coming from a more procedural background it has been hard to know what methods I can call and where (the examples are a bit too basic for helping out with this).

The look-and-feel of the new Joomla.org is pretty exciting, we were all used to the old site but this is a great design! It's a more professional look.. made to last! smilies/smiley.gif

Strange though that the logo does not meet the guidelines of the Brand Manual...

More than a few similarities w/our Joomla 1.5 contest template as well smilies/tongue.gif

Too bad they didn't choose it, they would have complemented each other nicely

How about www.oradeanul.com? It's a Wordpress with a theme like the above mentioned.
