Joomla ECommerce Solutions Compared

Joomla ECommerceI've made this chart after getting several requests in the last few days, all asking which Joomla E-Commerce they should use. There's no right answer as the two main shopping carts, Virtuemart and iJoomla Digistore, are both very different.

There are two other shopping carts available that look like they may become contenders:

  • Freeway is an enhanced modification of osCommerce and thanks to Damian, the lead developer, I've been able to create a column for it also.
  • IXXO is a commercial script I haven't had the chance to fully test-drive yet. It costs nearly $300.

If any major features have been missed and need comparing, drop a note in the comments.

OverallVirtuemart is a complete shopping solution with all the of features found in products such as OSCommerce and Zen Cart. For a full-blown e-commerce site, its the only choice, but it may be too complicated for smaller set-ups. Digistore is very simple and straight-forward. We use it for our store (see top menu) and it works flawlessly. Clients find it easy to understand and work with, although those that want more advanced features do need to move to Virtuemart.

Good article, here's a couple of data point from my experience. Digistore uses the ION Cube loader, so it's not as hackable as VirtueMart. I just tried Freeway yesterday and there was a bug in the installer that prevents it from detecting the database connection and completing. I filed a BugZilla report with them, so we'll see how long it takes to resolve it.

Thanks for this comparison Steve - very timely for me

(you have a X on VM for inventory but from the description it should be a tick)

Thanks Brian ... fixed that error.

Thanks Brent ... I've added encoding as a row in the cart.

Steve - on Digistore you have 2Checkout as a Commercial gateway. This is listed in the others as included. Does this mean you have to pay for this interface with Digistore?

Thanks.

We are checking out your bug report related to the Freeway install and will work out a solution soon.

The Freeway folks did indeed find the bug in the installer. It was one of those obnoxious this and that is the same as not-this or not-that that I've forgotten the formal name for. I've since logged three or four more bugs in their BugZilla system. My take on the Freeway 1.4 to Joomla 1.5 bridge so far is: very close, but not quite ready for primetime. I'll give it another few months, then it should be ready for live customers.

I'm looking forward to it, since it handles events as well as merchandise. Then I can ditch VirtueMart and AttendEvents for a single unified shopping cart. YEA!!

Great article Steve, thanks for the hard graft!
I'm an out-and-out VM fan and with the latest release it's clear they're pushing things forward... it's met all of my needs so far!

Thanks again, M

has anyone got any thoughts/experience on IXXO Cart? I am looking it into some detail. It is a commercial solution but it looks like it packs a very comprehensive range of features.

Hi Ian

I actually had an IXXO column on this chart but they objected to some of my data about them.

Getting what they thought to be the correct data was like pulling teeth so I gave up and dropped their column.
