Back in mid-2008, Kyle from JoomlaPraise.com approached me about writing a guest post. He was trying to promote AdminPraise, a new design for the Joomla administrator area. I was sceptical. Very. So sceptical that I asked him to basically defend the need for AdminPraise. His guest post became Are Joomla Admin Templates Worthwhile?. Fast-forward to early 2009 and I was able to review the next version AdminPraise2 and say: "No-one else is building administrator templates". I didn't see the point and it seemed many others didn't either. Now in 2010, I've got this to say: Kyle, you were right. I was wrong. Why Was Kyle Right?I've been spending more and more time with both Drupal and Wordpress lately as we've expanded our training to include them. It's become more and more obvious that an easy-to-use administrator area is a killer feature. - Drupal. It still sucks, even in Drupal 7. Even with a dedicated usability team, it's still clunky according to our students. Even DrupalGardens.com which is meant to herald a new era of usability is judged to need: "a lot of polish to address the market segment of people who don't already know Drupal. As it stands right now, an inexperienced user will reach the point where their site is created and not really know what to do next without going to read the help documents, which isn't a much better situation than just installing Drupal yourself."
- Wordpress. This is where the real progress is. The corporate firm behind Wordpress has hired Jane Wells, a usability expert, to push things forward. I heard her speak at Wordcamp Atlanta recently. She mentioned they were planning to run usability tests in over 30 countries and languages. I can tell from feedback in our classes that it works. People genuinely get the interface.
- Joomla. The admin interface hasn't changed since the days of Mambo. It needs to keep moving forward, keeping up and even exceeding the usability improvements made by other CMSs.
So how does Joomla compete with Drupal and Joomla who can muster milllions of dollars of Venture Capital money to support improvements? It needs to compete the same way it does in every area ... by setting it's fiercely innovative 3rd party developers loose. That's Joomla's strength. Usability improvements will come from designers like Kyle developing, testing and improving in friendly competition with each other. That's how real-world Joomla usability testing can get started on a large scale. The best and most useable features will hopefully be absorbed into future default administrator templates. What About Training Materials? One of the most common complaints about admin templates is that they'll confuse beginners. The answer to that is very simple. All training materials use rhuk_milkway right now as it's the default frontend template. So all training materials will just use the default administrator template. When people get more experienced, they change the administrator template. Admin Template ExamplesHere are some of the best admin templates out there right now. Hopefully we'll see many more in months to come: AdminPraise2 from JoomlaPraise.com

However, Joomla should take the Wordpress approach of hiring a true usability professional, then doing user testing and improvements based on real, quantifiable data. Someone else then writes the code to make the tested interface come to fruition.
Although we hear all kinds of nice stories from admin template developers about how much "better" their template is than Joomla's, we never get any quantifiable numbers. How is "better" defined"? "Better" for who? Who downloads their template, installs it, and abandons it because it's "too hard to use"? What exactly in the template is "better" and what is "worse"?
The admin interface defines the product for most users. That's not necessarily true for developers, but it's true for designers and for end-user clients.
As such, there is a LOT of ego tied up in the admin interface. It's all too easy to say "My admin template is best" and expect it to be incorporated into core.
When the person who runs the usability testing is not involved with final development of the template, you mitigate a lot of that ego impact. Quantitative data also mitigates that ego. And that is where I'd like to see Joomla go.

On a side note, if we weren't on the right track with 1.6 so far, why would Kyle have copied stuff from it?
Of course, all our other premium admin templates are completely unique.
@Jen, we don't ever say "ours is the best" though we do hear that that they are better all the time. That's not quantifying with numbers, but with real-world user feedback and opinions. I also think that there is more PRIDE than EGO involved (though a healthy portion of ego is important in design as you're putting yourself out there for criticism and must deliver your best).

In comparing to the others: Drupal went through and painful process to deliver the D7 Admin, and WordPress spent a ton. With Joomla, you're getting more and more 3rd party developers doing all this hard work and testing on their end and the project benefits from it. Sounds like Joomla is getting the best of all worlds.
Personally, I haven't had the chance to try Kyle's templates yet, but I have installed the JB Simpla and to be honest, it's a nice change of pace for the Joomla backend.
I've yet to try it on any client sites, but I will be doing further testing in the very near future.
I happen to think there's no better feedback than that of a customer. They tend to be very vocal when they pay for something and don't like it.
Kyle and Anthony both could ask for feedback on the usability of their new templates, but also, a quick spin around the block can also show just what they're made of.
I am doing my own usability tests and concepts with Joomla 1.6 and soon a new J! Admin template will be released to the quality bunch
The template will be a fork of BlueStork with some major UI improvements.
A few weeks more and a demo will be live.
Just so you know the editor seems to have missed my admin template which was very much released at the time of them writing. It's had great reviews so far:

Joomla Admin Desktop Template
I am using Joomla since 3 year and i am using same Admin Template and some time I am change it also. Presently I am try this Admin Templates.
It nice Article.I am really gonna try this one.
Thanks Guys..
Personally, I find that I can get things done a *lot* faster with an admin template.
For me Joomla Bamboo's Crisp is the hands-down winner. Without exception, it is now the first thing I install on a new Joomla! site as I can then get the rest done faster.
